Constellario AcademyFrequently asked questions and misconceptions
Everything in one place, from registration, payment and the course of workshops, through Systemic Affirmations™ and the practice of presence, to training, certificates and common misconceptions about systemic constellations. Clear, systematic and without mystification.
Registration and payment
How do I register for a systemic constellation workshop?
Registration is sent through the form on the website or by a message on Instagram. In the form you choose the city, the date and the form of participation: working on your own issue or taking part without your own issue. After you send the registration, the Constellario team receives your details and gets back to you if additional information is needed.
Can I send a registration without paying right away?
Yes. The registration is sent without immediate payment, and the Constellario team then sends you payment instructions.
What is the difference between a reservation and full payment?
A reservation means that you pay 50 € in advance so that your place for working on your own issue is secured. The reservation is included in the price. Full payment means that you pay the whole amount straight away. For working on your own issue, the price is 100 € with payment in full no later than 14 days before the workshop, and 130 € after that.
How much is the reservation for working on your own issue?
The place reservation for working on your own issue is 50 € and is included in the price. This payment secures your place in the schedule of work, because the number of personal pieces of work per day is limited.
When do I pay the remainder for working on my own issue?
If only the 50 € reservation has been paid, you pay the remainder according to the organiser's instructions. If the full amount is paid no later than 14 days before the workshop, the price is 100 €, and after that 130 €.
How much does taking part without your own issue cost?
Taking part without your own issue costs 20 €. This option is intended for participants who come as representatives, attend the group's work and take part in other participants' processes without setting up a personal issue of their own.
What if I register but can't come?
Let us know as soon as possible, so that we can offer the place to someone else. If you cancel up to 6 days before the workshop, you can use your payment for one of the dates in the following 3 months. If you cancel later or don't come, the payment is considered used and cannot be transferred.
Is the reservation refunded if I withdraw?
No. By making a reservation you confirm your place, and due to the limited number of places and organisational costs, the reservation is non-refundable. If you cancel up to 6 days before the workshop, you can use your payment for one of the dates in the following 3 months.
Constellation workshops
How long does a workshop last?
The workshop lasts until all the planned pieces of work have been done, roughly until 6 pm. We take breaks spontaneously, in the rhythm of the group and of the processes that open up.
What is the difference between working on your own issue and taking part without an issue?
Working on your own issue means that you come with a specific issue and are given space for your own constellation work. Taking part without an issue means that you are a representative or a witness of the process and follow the work of others. Both are valuable, but they are not the same: the first is focused on your issue, the second gives you experience through presence and the group process.
Can I come if I don't have my own issue?
Yes. Come as a participant without your own issue. Many people gain important insights for their own lives precisely through being present and acting as a representative.
Do participants who don't work on their own issue get anything from the process?
Yes. The process does not unfold only for the person who brings the issue. Through acting as a representative and observing, you often recognise parts of your own experience, relationships and patterns.
How many people can work on their own issue per day?
The number of pieces of work per day is limited, so that each process gets enough time, attention and space.
Can I work on an issue on behalf of someone else?
In constellation work we do not work "instead of" another person. You work on the issue from your own position and your own relationship to the situation. For example, you do not work on an issue "for your partner", "for your child" or "for your parent", but explore what is happening within you in relation to that person, situation or family system. The work always starts from your responsibility, your place and your inner position.
Do I need to prepare before the workshop?
It is enough to come with openness, attention and a willingness to look at the issue from a broader systemic angle. If you are working on a personal issue, it is helpful to write down a few sentences before the workshop about what brings you, what keeps repeating and what you want to understand better. You don't need to know a "perfectly formulated" issue in advance, it can become clear through conversation and the work process itself.
Do I have to tell all the details in front of the group?
No. It is enough to present the issue clearly, as far as is needed for the work. The process does not depend on your whole life story, but on seeing the basic dynamic that needs attention.
What does it mean to be a representative?
A representative stands in the place of a member of the system from someone else's issue and conveys what they feel. This is often a powerful experience for the representative too.
Individual sessions and online constellations
What is the difference between an individual, an in-person group and an online constellation?
An individual constellation is one-to-one work with Dr Jelena, devoted to your issue. An in-person group workshop takes place in the field of the group, with or without your own issue. An online group constellation takes place in a small group, over the internet. You choose according to your issue, your needs and whether an individual or a group setting suits you better.
What does an online constellation look like?
You join from your own space, at the agreed time. The work is guided through conversation, attention and a systemic process adapted to the online format. Be in a quiet space, without distractions, with a little time before and after the meeting.
How many places are there in online constellations?
Online group constellations have a limited number of places. There are 5 places for each online date. A place is reserved by paying the full amount in advance.
How much does an online group constellation cost?
The price of an online group constellation is 130 €. The amount is paid in advance, when reserving a place. There is no additional fee for the preliminary conversation.
Can I book just a consultation, without a constellation?
Yes. A consultation is for you when you just want to ask something: to clarify an issue, get some direction or see which form of work is best right now.
How long does a consultation last?
The consultation lasts 50 minutes and takes place online. The price is 95 €, paid in advance, and the appointment is arranged individually.
How is a 1:1 constellation booked?
Send a registration or an enquiry. The Constellario team will get back to you to arrange the date and details, in line with Dr Jelena's available dates.
Is a 1:1 constellation paid in advance?
Yes. The individual session is paid in advance, and the appointment is reserved once the payment has been recorded. Cancellation at least 48 hours before the appointment: the appointment can be rescheduled. Later cancellation or not showing up: the amount paid is considered used.
Do I have to know what the issue is?
It is enough to describe what is troubling you or what keeps repeating. We define the issue together at the beginning of the meeting.
Does online work have the same effect as in-person work?
Online constellations are done with figures, space or guided attention and offer the same systemic view of the issue.
What comes after the meeting?
You receive sentences and Systemic Affirmations™ that support the process in the days after the work.
What do I need for online work?
A stable internet connection, a camera and a quiet space where no one will interrupt you.
Business constellations
What are business constellations?
Business constellations are a systemic way of looking at a business situation. Instead of looking only at an individual or a problem, we look at the wider system: people, relationships, roles, structure, goals and the dynamics that may influence what is happening in the business.
What issues can I come with?
With an issue concerning a decision, a business standstill, team relationships, conflict, a change of position, company development, leadership, money, clients, partnerships, the succession of a family business or a dilemma about which direction to take.
Do I need to know in advance exactly what the problem is?
No. It is enough that you know what is happening at the moment and what you want to understand. During the conversation we refine together the question with which we enter the work.
Is a business constellation only for company owners?
No. It is intended for owners, entrepreneurs, directors, leaders, team members and professionals who want to look at a particular business situation from a systemic perspective.
Can we work on making a business decision?
Yes. A constellation does not make the decision for you, but allows you to see more clearly the relationships, consequences and elements of the situation that may not have been visible to you before.
Can we work on a relationship with a business partner or team member?
Yes. Relationships between owners, partners, managers, employees or family members who run a business together are frequent issues in business constellations.
Can I work on the issue of money and earnings?
Yes. We can explore your relationship to money, to the value of your own work, to charging, earnings, business growth or other questions that arise in a specific business context.
Can a business constellation show why a company is stagnating?
It can help to see the systemic relationships and dynamics that may be contributing to a standstill. We do not start from the assumption that there is only one cause, but explore the broader picture of the system.
What if I have a family business?
In family businesses, family and business roles are often intertwined. The work can help to distinguish more clearly what belongs to the family and what to the business system, as well as where conflicts arise between these two levels.
Can the succession of a company and a change of generations be worked on?
Yes. The transfer of ownership, children entering the business, the founder's withdrawal and the shift of responsibility between generations can be explored through systemic work.
Do employees have to take part?
No. In a business constellation, only the person who brings their issue can do the work. The presence of other people from the company is not necessary.
Do I have to disclose confidential information about the company?
No. The work does not require every detail or any business secrets. You share only the information that is relevant to the issue and that you wish to share.
Are business constellations done individually or in a group?
It is possible to work individually, and certain business issues can also be addressed in group constellation work, depending on the format you choose.
Does a constellation replace business consulting?
No. A constellation offers a different perspective on the system and the relationships within it. Financial, legal, tax and other specialist business decisions should be made with the appropriate professional advisers.
How many meetings are needed?
One clearly defined business issue is often addressed in a single constellation. If there are several separate questions or a complex process of change, additional meetings can be held.
What can I expect after a constellation?
The aim is not to get a ready-made formula for what you must do, but to see the situation more clearly. From that different perspective it often becomes easier to recognise the next step or the decision you want to make.
Limits of the work and safety
Are systemic constellations psychotherapy?
No. Systemic constellations are not psychotherapy. They are an experiential method of personal development, systemic insight, and work with relationships, family dynamics and inner patterns. Constellations can be a deep and meaningful process, but they do not replace psychotherapeutic, psychiatric or medical treatment.
Do constellations replace medical or psychiatric treatment?
No. Constellations are no substitute for medical, psychiatric or psychotherapeutic treatment. If you have health or psychological difficulties, it is important that you are in contact with an appropriate professional. Constellation work can address the systemic, emotional and relational context of an issue, but it does not make a diagnosis, does not prescribe therapy and does not replace professional medical help.
Can I come if I am currently in a serious mental health crisis?
If you are currently in a serious psychological crisis, in intensive therapy, have acute symptoms or feel that you need urgent professional help, it is recommended that you consult a psychotherapist, psychiatrist or doctor before registering. Workshops require a certain level of stability, presence and personal responsibility.
Can I work on an issue related to health?
You can explore your relationship to the body, illness, a symptom, fear, family dynamics or the emotional context of a health issue. However, constellations are not used for diagnosis, treatment, interpreting medical results or giving advice on therapy. For all medical decisions you need to consult a doctor or another appropriate professional.
Is everything that is said at the workshop confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality is part of the ethics of group work. What opens up at the workshop stays in that space, and every participant is expected to respect this.
Do I have to take part if something feels uncomfortable?
No. You have the right to say so if you don't want something, if you need time or if you want to remain an observer. The work requires openness, not forcing. Respect your boundaries.
Systemic Affirmations™
What are Systemic Affirmations™?
Systemic Affirmations™ are an original tool created by Dr Jelena Đorđević and they are more than repetition: through them you discover that you have the power to change yourself. They rely on the brain's ability to change and to create new neural connections. When you repeat them with attention and presence, new inner patterns gradually form, and with them the way you feel, choose and react changes too.
How do Systemic Affirmations™ differ from ordinary affirmations?
Ordinary affirmations are often positive sentences that you do not feel to be true. Systemic Affirmations™ start from your inner system: family patterns, relationships, emotions, the body, guilt, belonging, fear, loyalty and the right to your own place. They do not try to convince you of anything. They gradually build a new relationship with yourself, others and life.
What do affirmations have to do with the neuroplasticity of the brain?
Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to change through experience, repetition, attention and learning. What you repeat consciously and often enough creates new inner pathways. Systemic Affirmations™ work on this principle: a sentence connected with emotion, the body and presence, repeated as a practice.
Do I have to believe an affirmation for it to work?
You don't have to believe it straight away. What matters is that the sentence is not forceful, too big or far from your experience. A good systemic affirmation builds a bridge between the old pattern and a new possibility.
How often should Systemic Affirmations™ be practised?
Regularly, at a rhythm you can sustain. A short, conscious and repeated practice is worth more than occasional intensive work. Not mechanically, but with attention, breath and a felt sense in the body.
Can I buy the audio program and work on my own?
Yes. The Systemic Affirmations™ audio program is for independent work, at your own pace. You return to the recording, repeat the practice and gradually build your own relationship with the affirmations. Before buying, you can listen to an excerpt.
When is it better to book 1:1 work with Dr Jelena?
When you need personal support, when you have a specific issue or when you want affirmations shaped precisely for your process. In individual work, the affirmations arise from your issue, patterns, emotions and systemic dynamics.
Conscious presence
What is the Practice of conscious presence?
A meditative practice focused on the maturing of awareness, the deepening of presence and the direct recognition of "I Am". Thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations remain part of experience, but they are no longer the only place from which you know yourself.
Is it meditation?
Yes, it is a meditative practice. It is not a relaxation technique, it is not work on a specific issue and it is not psychotherapy. At its centre is distinguishing what appears in experience from the awareness that is present to it.
What does "I Am" mean?
"I Am" is the direct experience of existence, prior to the roles, stories and identities we carry. In practice it is not a sentence to be repeated, but something that is recognised.
What does the self-inquiry "Who am I?" mean
The self-inquiry "Who am I?" is not mental analysis. It is directing attention towards the one who perceives thoughts, emotions, the body and experience, towards the awareness in which all of this appears.
Do I need to have experience with meditation?
No. The practice is for both beginners and those with experience. A willingness to explore direct experience is enough.
Are there audio meditations for the practice of presence?
Systemic Affirmations™ for the practice of presence are in preparation. Until then, you can do the practice within an individual session with Dr Jelena.
When is it better to book a 1:1 meeting?
When you want personal guidance in practice and a deeper exploration of presence and "I Am".
Academy: training and certificates
Are all trainings in systemic constellations the same?
No. Today there are very different trainings in systemic constellations: shorter courses, weekend trainings, private schools, international programs, trainings linked to particular institutes, as well as programs that combine systemic work with psychology, coaching, personal development or other helping approaches. That is why it is important for a participant to look not only at the name of a training, but also at its structure, duration, content, ethical framework, supervision, the trainer's experience and the way the training connects with real work with people.
What does it mean when a school says it issues a "world-recognised certificate"?
The expression "internationally recognised certificate" should be understood carefully. In the field of systemic constellations there is no single universal state or international licence that automatically applies everywhere in the world as a legal authorisation to practise. Most often it is a certificate recognised by a particular private school, institute, association or professional network. This may have value within that community, but it does not necessarily mean that it is a state licence or a legally regulated title. That is why it is important to ask: who issues the certificate, what exactly does it confirm, is the program accredited as formal education or does it belong to non-formal adult education, and what is the person realistically allowed to do after completing the training.
Is a certificate in systemic constellations the same as a state licence?
No. A certificate of completed training in systemic constellations is not the same as a state licence for psychological, psychotherapeutic, medical or clinical work. The certificate confirms that the person has completed a particular program according to the rules of the school or academy that issues it. It can be important evidence of training, hours of work, practical exercises and acquired competences, but it does not automatically give the right to present oneself as a psychologist, psychotherapist, doctor or clinical professional without the appropriate formal education and licence.
What does it mean that the training is non-formal adult education?
Non-formal adult education means that the program is carried out outside the state system of formal education, but it can have a clear structure, modules, a theoretical part, practice, supervision, assignments, assessment of knowledge and a certificate from the school that organises it. This does not have to mean that the training is less valuable. On the contrary, many serious trainings in the field of personal development and helping skills belong to non-formal education. What matters is only that it is clearly known what the certificate is and what it is not.
What is the problem with trainings that "sell a story"?
The problem arises when a training promises more than it can realistically provide. This happens when too many big words are used, when a quick title is promised, "worldwide recognition", powerful status, guaranteed transformation or the ability to work with people without serious preparation, ethics and supervision. Working with people requires much more than a learned technique. It requires an understanding of people, relationships, emotions, the body, trauma, boundaries, responsibility and one's own limitations. A good training does not create an illusion of power, but develops maturity, caution, presence and professional responsibility.
How does a serious training differ from a short course?
A serious training has a clear structure, duration, theoretical foundation, practical work, personal process, supervision, ethical framework and criteria for completion. A short course can be useful as an introduction or inspiration, but it is not the same as professional training for working with people. In systemic constellations it is especially important that the participant learns not only "how to set up a constellation", but also how to understand the process happening in the client, when to stop, when not to go deeper, when to refer the person to another professional and how to keep the boundaries of the work.
What does the Constellario certificate confirm?
The Constellario certificate confirms that the participant has completed a particular program of Constellario Academy according to its structure, modules, practical requirements and standards of work. It confirms an educational path within Constellario Academy, but it is not a state licence for psychotherapy, psychology, medicine or clinical practice. The value of the Constellario certificate lies not in a claim that it replaces formal licences, but in a clear methodology, a psychological foundation, experiential work, ethics, supervision and a research-based approach to systemic constellations.
Why does Constellario Academy insist on a psychological foundation?
Because working with people cannot be reduced to technique alone. The person leading the process needs to understand basic psychological concepts, emotions, boundaries, developmental issues, family relationships, trauma, psychopathology, ethics and the responsibility of helping work. That is why, for most participants, the first step is the School of Practical Psychology. It is not meant to turn anyone into a psychologist, but to give them a foundation for more mature, more careful and more responsible work with people.
Why is research into clients' experience important?
Many trainings start from theory, tradition or the personal style of the facilitator. The Constellario approach also starts from another important question: what do clients actually experience as significant during systemic constellations? A research-based approach makes it possible to view systemic work not only through what the facilitator thinks they are doing, but through the experience of the person going through the process. In this way training can be shaped more responsibly, around the real patterns of the client's experience, the facilitator's competences, ethics, boundaries and integration after the work.
How do I know which training is right for me?
Before enrolling in any training, it is useful to ask a few questions: Who leads the training and what education and experience do they have? How long does the training last? Does it include theory, practice and supervision? Does it clearly explain what the certificate is and what it is not? Are the boundaries between constellation work, psychotherapy, psychology and medicine respected? Is there talk of ethics and responsibility? Does the training develop maturity or only promise a title? Is there space for personal work and integration? Are participants taught when to work, but also when not to work? A good training should not seduce you with big promises, but help you develop knowledge, presence, responsibility and real competence for working with people.
Is there a final test for the certificate?
No. A final test is not required for the Constellario Academy certificate.
How long do I have access to the materials?
Access to all program materials lasts 12 months from the date of purchase. You follow the material at your own pace and return to the lessons whenever you need.
Academy: the professional path
Can I enrol if I am not a psychologist?
Yes. The programs are also open to those who are not psychologists. For most, the first step is the School of Practical Psychology: a foundation for understanding people, emotions, relationships, boundaries, trauma and the ethics of helping work.
Why is the School of Practical Psychology the first step?
Because responsible work with people does not begin with technique, but with an understanding of the human being. Before someone learns to lead a systemic process, it is important that they understand basic psychological concepts, emotional processes, developmental issues, family relationships, boundaries, psychopathology and the ethics of helping work. The School of Practical Psychology provides that foundation.
Do psychologists have to attend the School of Practical Psychology?
Psychologists and psychotherapists can enrol directly in the Constellario Training for Systemic Constellation Facilitators, as it is assumed that they already have a basic education in psychology. For everyone else, the School of Practical Psychology is the first step.
How much time per week do I need to set aside for the training?
The time depends on the program, the pace of work and personal commitment. On average, you need to set aside time for listening to lessons, reading materials, assignments, exercises and integrating what you have learned. The training is not intended merely as an informational course, but as a process of learning, personal work and practical application.
Can I listen to the recordings if I miss a meeting?
Yes. Recordings of the lectures are available to participants within the program, in accordance with the access rules for the specific training. This makes it possible to follow the lessons at your own pace and to revisit the material when needed.
What happens after the certificate?
A certificate marks the completion of a particular program, but not the end of development. After the training, professional development continues through practice, supervision, mentoring, additional workshops, intensives, a community of practitioners and continuous learning.
Can I work with people straight after the training?
The certificate confirms a completed training, but working with people requires more: practice, supervision, ethical maturity, awareness of boundaries and continuous development. A good training does not create the illusion of a finished expert. It lays the foundation for responsible practice.

The nature of constellations
Do constellations, as an energy technique, remove blockages?
When constellations are presented as an energy technique that "removes blockages", they lose their essence and turn into a treatment through which someone from outside "fixes" what is not working within us. Such an approach creates a seductive image that there is a powerful method or person who can free us from pain without our participation: the therapist becomes a figure of power, and the client a passive recipient of change. What we call a blockage is not a fault, but a protective mechanism, a frozen part of love, emotion or memory that has not yet been able to be seen. As long as we look at it as a disturbance to be removed, we are fighting against our own life and separating ourselves from what is asking to be understood.
The truthConstellations are not an energy technique, but a process of awareness, acknowledgement and inner alignment. A blockage is not an obstacle, but an invitation to pause and hear what had until then remained unspoken. When the body feels what has long been held back, and the heart opens to acknowledging the truth, energy does not need to be "set in motion", it begins to flow again by itself. True change does not come from outside, but from within: through understanding, acceptance and a change of perspective. Systemic affirmations become a language of order and acknowledgement that restores the order of love where it was disrupted; presence exercises help the body and consciousness stay in touch with the moment; the transformation of the mind begins when we stop seeing life as something that "happens" to us and start living it from conscious choice. When these three dimensions come together, a person no longer tries to "remove the blockage", they learn to understand it, to give it a place and to recognise in it a part of life that is returning. Then energy is released not by technique, but by truth.
Do constellations work beyond time, space, reality and logic?
When constellations are described as a mysterious, almost magical method that works "beyond time and space", their real value is overlooked: a precise psychological and phenomenological insight into the hidden systemic order. Such a view pushes constellations into the realm of the unverifiable and the "accessible only to the special", and their applicability in everyday life is lost. Mystification may attract curiosity, but at the same time it distances people from responsibility for their own lives. If something "works by itself", without our presence, perception and integration, it is easy to slip into passivity and an escape from reality.
The truthConstellations are not a method "beyond reality", but are deeply immersed in reality, only at a layer that usually remains unconscious. They work in the field of relationships, emotions and unconscious loyalties that we do not perceive until we bring them "into the light". In the work we use the logic of relationships: not the rational logic of everyday thinking, but a deeper inner logic of connection, belonging and exclusion. This logic has its own laws, hierarchy, balance in giving and receiving, respect for destiny, and when they are violated, the system creates symptoms. That is why what seems "illogical" from the perspective of the ego often has its own inner accuracy in the order of love. Constellations do not take us out of reality; they bring us back to the reality we have repressed and invite us to see it from a new, broader position.
Can the constellation method be patented as a personal discovery or a spiritual invention?
The idea that someone can "own" a method of working with people, the system and the collective field, as if it were a technical invention, stems from the logic of the market, not from an understanding of the nature of constellations or the legal definition of an invention. When the claim that "someone has invented a new method" is accompanied by constructs such as "other lives", "vibrations of higher worlds" or "quantum fields of special light beings", the door opens to projection and suggestion. Representatives in constellations always feel something, that is the nature of working in the field, but a feeling does not automatically mean truth, nor does it justify introducing unverified concepts with no basis in Hellinger's work or in the client's reality.
The truthSystemic constellations are not a technology, but a phenomenological approach to perceiving what is. No one "invents" constellations; everyone develops their own style, language and structure of work on the basis of the universal principles of connection and belonging that Hellinger clearly set out. Authentic work can have a personal touch, a different language, structure, exercises and techniques, but it always rests on the same foundations: the right to belong, order, balance and respect for destiny. A personal contribution is welcome; appropriating the method itself as an "invention" is in keeping neither with its nature nor with the truth.
Does every problem have a single energetic cause that can be removed with one treatment?
The idea that every problem has one specific energetic cause that can be "located" and "removed" with a single treatment dangerously oversimplifies the human psyche and systemic dynamics. It resembles mechanics: find the fault, fix it, done. But no symptom, feeling or life situation exists in isolation; there is a complex web of relationships, loyalties, traumas, choices and family dynamics that intertwine. When a client is told that their problem has one "main cause" that will disappear with a single treatment, an illusion of control and a quick fix is created, and in reality this leads to disappointment and the repetition of patterns. Life does not change linearly, because we are not linear beings.
The truthSystemic work does not look for a "cause", but for contact with the whole. It does not free us by finding one "problematic" point, but teaches us to look differently at everything that exists in our inner and outer space. Change happens gradually, in waves of understanding, acknowledgement, transformation and integration. A deeper pattern sometimes becomes clear only after several layers of work, and even then it cannot be "removed": it can be recognised, respected and brought into the order of the system. Neuroplasticity confirms that change is possible, but not through shock, rather through repetition and conscious practice. An insight in a constellation can be transformative, but if we do not integrate it through a new way of thinking, feeling and behaving, the brain returns to familiar pathways. Constellations are not a magic wand; they open up a space, and what we do with that space depends on us.
Does the constellation facilitator find an "energy hub" and thereby automatically resolve everything that is blocked?
The idea that the constellation facilitator spots an "energy hub" and thereby automatically resolves all blockages creates a false image of constellations as miraculous diagnostics and instant healing. It implies that someone outside knows more than we do about our inner world and that it is enough for them to "hit the right spot". This logic gives the facilitator a power that no one should have: to know, resolve and transform another person's destiny without a process and without the participation of the client's awareness. The facilitator is thus reduced to an "energy surgeon", and the client to a passive recipient of an intervention.
The truthThe constellation facilitator does not discover the hub; together with the client and the field they become a witness to what is revealed. There is no automatic resolution: there is a process, consent, movement, acknowledgement, sometimes even a painful confrontation. And sometimes there is only insight, without immediate change. Hubs are often multi-layered: what appears to be the main problem may be just a disturbing symptom, while the real dynamic lies deeper. That is why it is important to keep humility before the field and to wait for the order to reveal itself. Neuroplasticity shows that patterns are not erased, they are replaced by new ones, through repetition and conscious presence. A constellation does not "unlock" the field for us; it invites us to take an inner step. And that step we take ourselves.
Do constellations change destiny, does everything in life turn around after a single session?
There is a common notion that after one constellation everything changes, relationships are repaired, problems disappear, life turns around. Such expectations are humanly understandable: faced with pain, a person wants a miracle. But the idea of "instant change" supports passivity and creates the illusion that it is enough to attend one session for destiny to be rewritten. In reality, the process that a constellation sets in motion requires time, stabilisation and inner integration. Sometimes change comes quickly, sometimes slowly, and sometimes it seems as though there is none, because the system repeats the old pattern until the new awareness is established.
The truthConstellations do not change destiny; they change the perspective from which we view life. This does not erase destiny, it changes our ability to live it consciously. Scientifically, change relies on neuroplasticity and the integration of experience: a powerful insight forms a new neural network, but at first it is fragile and stabilises only through repetition and conscious choices. That is why two common reactions appear after the work: dramatisation (the system intensifies the old pattern once more in order to release it) and duplication (similar situations arise that test how far the new awareness has been absorbed). This is not a mistake, but a natural mechanism of integration. Systemic affirmations then become a bridge between insight and everyday life; presence exercises bring us back to the body and the breath. When awareness matures, we no longer look for an instant turnaround; we understand that life does not change because we have "done" something, but because we have allowed what has always known order to mature within us.
Are constellations a magic ritual that changes reality?
This misconception comes from the need to present constellations as a miraculous technique that solves problems without personal effort. In this narrative the constellation facilitator becomes a "shaman" who handles invisible forces, and the client a passive recipient of miraculous healing. Such an approach creates a spiral of spiritual dependence: people rely exclusively on external interventions, expect "the field to take care of everything" and neglect their own responsibility, learning and change.
The truthConstellations are not a magic ritual, but a method with deep insights, grounded in the observation of systemic laws and interpersonal dynamics. Their power lies not in mysticism, but in the precision of observation and in contact with the truth. Real transformation does not come from outside, but from within, through awareness, recognising patterns, taking responsibility and a willingness to live differently. Constellations can open the door, but the step through it is taken by the client. Magical thinking is a substitute for real work on oneself; systemic work requires an adult capacity for truth.
Understanding, the mind and integration
Does conscious understanding interfere with the process?
One often hears that the client does not need to know anything about what is happening in a constellation, that conscious understanding "gets in the way" and that the mind should be switched off so that "the field" can work. This creates an impression of mystery, but in reality it leads to dependence on authority: believing that they must not think, the client loses contact with their own feelings and with the ability to recognise truth from within. The idea that awareness disrupts the process actually denies the deepest purpose of constellations, the awakening of awareness. When awareness is switched off, we open up space for projection, not for truth.
The truthIn constellations the mind is not asked to be silent, but to open. Conscious understanding does not interfere with the process, it completes it. Understanding is the bridge between the moment of insight and everyday life; without it the experience remains like a dream that cannot be applied. Systemic affirmations restore order between feelings, thoughts and reality; through them the mind learns not to judge, but to see. Presence exercises help us stay in touch with ourselves while the process unfolds. When a person begins to understand what they feel and to feel what they understand, they are no longer guided by authority or technique, they are guided by themselves.
Should the mind be switched off because it cannot understand the field?
The claim that "the mind gets in the way" and that it needs to be "switched off" creates an artificial division within a person, between feelings and thoughts, body and consciousness, intuition and reason. The mind is presented as the enemy of inner truth, which leads to a deeper fragmentation of the personality. The idea that the mind "has no access to the field" is often used to make questioning and integration seem pointless, along with the natural human need to connect experiences into a broader framework. Taking away the legitimacy of this need leads to confusion, blind obedience and dependence on authority.
The truthThe mind should not be switched off; it should be placed in the service of wholeness. It does not have to know everything, but it is able to ask a question, recognise a pattern and take part in an inner dialogue. A mind that connects with the heart and the body does not control, but understands and harmonises. The field of constellations is indeed complex and often non-linear, and that is exactly why it is important that, after the experience, the mind helps integrate what was lived into everyday awareness. The deepest transformation does not come from excluding, but from including all parts of one's being: body, soul, feelings and mind.
Do analysis and asking questions interrupt the process and cancel the effect of the work?
This claim is used to discourage the client from questioning, understanding or putting into words what they are going through. The idea that analysis "switches off the field" or that questions "cancel the effect" introduces an atmosphere of fear and passivity: the client becomes an obedient recipient, and the therapist an authority whose knowledge is not questioned. This blocks the natural flow of integration. If the client is denied the right to ask and to voice doubts, they cannot become the subject of their own change, and remain dependent on the therapist, the session and the "field".
The truthThe constellation process does not stop when the session ends; that is when it only begins to unfold in everyday life. The body carries the impulse, the heart remembers the experience, and the mind integrates the meaning. Asking questions does not cancel the effect, it deepens understanding. Questions are a sign of alertness and of the client's readiness to enter into dialogue with themselves, rather than blindly accept the authority of "the field". A mature constellation facilitator will not be afraid of questions, they will welcome them. Lasting change involves the whole being: body, emotions, soul and mind.
Do I need to do anything after a constellation, or does "the field do its work"?
It is often repeated that it is enough to come, have the experience and surrender to the "field", as if everything else unfolds by itself, without our awareness and decisions. This turns a constellation into a ritual of passive waiting. The field really does work, but it works through the person, not instead of them; if awareness is missing, it is left without a channel through which to express itself. The idea that "nothing needs to be done" is just an extension of the same pattern of avoiding responsibility, the belief that something from outside will resolve what we are not yet ready to see.
The truthA constellation is only the beginning. The process continues for days, weeks, sometimes even months; consciousness integrates the new experience, the body learns a new rhythm, and life tests us through situations in which old patterns return. This is not regression, but the way new awareness becomes established. Systemic affirmations consolidate the new order in consciousness; presence exercises help us stay in contact with ourselves while the process unfolds. The "work" after a constellation is not effort, but consciously living what we have come to know. The right sentence is not "nothing needs to be done", but rather, "one needs to stay present".
The field, energy and cosmic laws
Does the "information field" work according to special cosmic rules?
The claim that constellations rest on an "information field" that functions according to special "cosmic" rules introduces the idea that the process is governed by some esoteric law, independent of the client's awareness. It implies that there is a secret level of the field that automatically knows, resolves and guides change, without the client's choice, engagement and understanding. This diminishes personal engagement and leads to the passive expectation that everything will happen by itself.
The truthThe terms "field of knowledge", "knowing field" or "information field" help describe the phenomenon that representatives (or the client) can experience feelings and insights that are not obvious to reason. But this does not mean that the field is an independent force acting without us, nor that it functions according to an arbitrary "cosmic" law. In systemic work we access layers of consciousness and relationships that go beyond ordinary perception, but these layers are not outside reality, they are deep within it. Neurobiologically, what we call the "field" is linked to collective patterns, unconscious processes and deep relationships. Change does not come because the field has "cosmic instructions", but because we take on a role in revealing, understanding and transforming it.
Do constellations work at the "quantum level", changing the vibrations of cells and DNA?
Claims that constellations "change the vibrations of cells and DNA", act "at the level of the quantum mind" or open "other dimensions and parallel universes" sound scientific, but they borrow words from physics and biology without their meaning. In this way an ordinary, verifiable psychological process is wrapped in a veil of unverifiability, and the client is led to believe that something is happening within them that they can neither understand nor verify.
The truthConstellations do not change the genetic code, nor do they work according to the laws of quantum physics. What really changes is the way we perceive, feel and react, and this has measurable foundations in neuroscience. Through conscious insight and repeated practice, new neural connections are strengthened (what fires together, wires together), and the effects of chronic stress on the body can ease when the inner relationship to experience changes. Words such as "vibration" or "energy" can be vivid metaphors for states of the body and attention, but they should not be taken literally as physical forces. The value of constellations is psychological and phenomenological, and it does not become greater if we call it "quantum", it only becomes less verifiable. Truth has no need for mystification.
Is the "order of love" a cosmic law that governs the entire universe?
When the "order of love" is presented as a cosmic law governing all relationships in the universe, from a "universal matrix" connecting all planes of existence, it stops being something we understand and live, and becomes an abstraction before which we are powerless. Responsibility is thus shifted onto the "law" rather than onto the person who chooses.
The truthThe order of love, as Hellinger described it, is not a cosmic force, but a set of relational laws: the right to belong, order and hierarchy according to the time of entering the system, and balance in giving and receiving. When these laws are violated, when someone is excluded, when the order is disturbed, when giving and receiving are out of balance, the system shows it through a symptom, tension or repetition. These are principles of human connection that we can recognise in every family and every relationship, not secrets of the universe available to the chosen. That is exactly why they are applicable: when we consciously restore order, through acknowledgement and respect for everyone's place in the system, tension eases, not through magic, but because the relationship has once again been set on truth.
Does the "colour" or "vibration of the soul" change during the work, and does it show the next level of development?
Claims about the "colour of the soul" that changes and reveals "the next level of development", about the "quintessence" as a union of light and darkness, or about the "voice of the soul" that gives accurate answers to all questions in the field, seem spiritual, but they introduce into the work something that can be neither seen nor verified. What a representative feels is thereby too readily declared an objective truth about someone's soul. Truth What really shows itself in the work are not "colours" or "levels" of the soul, but relational dynamics: who in the system is excluded, where order has been disrupted, where giving and receiving are out of balance. Representatives really do feel bodily and emotional signals; this is resonance and empathic synchronisation, the ability to perceive another person's state non-verbally, but a feeling is not a prophecy, nor a measure of someone's spiritual rank. A constellation does not rank people and does not measure "levels of consciousness". It restores respect for what is. Every time we turn a feeling into a claim about someone else's soul, we leave humility before the field and enter projection. Mature work distinguishes what is felt from what is known.
Does a constellation correct the "ancestral energy" that flows through us?
The image of "ancestral energy" flowing through us, which a constellation "corrects", easily slides into mechanics: as if there were a current that someone from outside redirects, thereby resolving what was inherited. In this way inheritance is reduced to an energetic fault, and the client to a passive recipient of a repair.
The truthWhat we really inherit are not "energies", but patterns: unconscious loyalties, unspoken stories, excluded members, unmourned losses, roles taken on. Children of a system often, out of love, carry what previous generations could not bear, and this shapes choices, fears and repetitions. A constellation does not "correct energy", but makes that pattern visible and restores order: the excluded is given their place, the burden is returned with love to the one it belongs to, and the order of generations is respected. Then the child of the system no longer has to carry what is not theirs. What changes is not a "current", but the inner relationship to the inheritance, and we integrate this change consciously, through presence and repeated practice.
Soul, destiny and past lives
Do constellations reveal past lives, karma and "soul contracts"?
Claims that a constellation reveals "previous lives", "the moment when the soul first became blocked in incarnation", "soul contracts" and "tasks chosen before birth", and that it "erases karmic debts", seem appealing because they offer a final explanation for pain. But what one gets from this is a story that cannot be verified, and that shifts responsibility for one's present life into an unfathomable past.
The truthSystemic constellations work with what is real and present: with relationships, inherited patterns and the dynamics of the family system in this life. What sometimes sounds like a "past life" is most often the unconsciously adopted destiny of an excluded or forgotten member of the system, an identification out of love, not the soul's memory of an earlier incarnation. The value of the work lies not in naming karma, but in recognising the pattern, acknowledging what was excluded and restoring order, here and now. Beliefs about reincarnation are personal and legitimate as a spiritual stance, but they are not a diagnosis and should not be offered as fact about someone else's life. Change does not come from "erasing debts", but from a conscious step in the present.
Do constellations enable contact and communication with the souls of the dead?
The idea that the soul of a deceased person "speaks directly through the representative", that one can "hear the voice of the soul giving accurate answers" or see "where the soul is stuck between worlds", turns a constellation into a séance. What the representative feels is thereby declared a message from beyond, and the client is made dependent on an interpretation they cannot verify.
The truthIn a constellation we do not talk with the dead; we give a place to those in the system who were excluded, who left too early or who were never mourned. When the deceased is acknowledged in their place and the loss is finally mourned, something settles in the living: not because "the soul has spoken", but because the exclusion has ended and respect has been restored. What a representative feels is resonance with the dynamics of the system, not a dictate from the other world. The words that are spoken, "I see you", "you belong to us", "I respect your destiny", heal because they restore connection and order, not because they convey a secret message. For the pain of loss and complicated grief, constellations can be a support, but they are no substitute for professional help when it is needed.
Does a constellation reveal a "divine mission" and change the destiny of the entire lineage?
Claims about a "divine mission" revealed by a constellation, about a "divine plan of incarnation" that one needs to "remember", or that a single act of forgiveness towards an ancestor "changes the destiny of the entire lineage", place an enormous burden and an enormous promise on a single piece of work. The client either feels chosen, or guilty for "not having fulfilled the mission", and both outcomes take them away from their own, real life.
The truthA constellation does not hand out missions and does not prescribe the destiny of a lineage. What it makes possible is for us to recognise our place in the system, to return with respect what we unconsciously took on, and to make a conscious choice about how we want to live. Forgiveness and acknowledgement really can loosen a pattern that has been passed down through generations, but they act on us and our relationship to the inheritance, not as a command over the destinies of other people. "Meaning" is not a secret task revealed to us from outside; it arises when we consciously take responsibility for our own life. The greatest freedom in systemic work lies precisely in this: we do not have to carry other people's destinies or fulfil assigned roles, we can belong and still be ourselves.
Does a constellation only work if the person is sufficiently "spiritually awakened"?
The claim that a constellation "won't work if the soul is not awakened enough" sounds spiritual, but in fact shifts every failure onto the client: if nothing has changed, their insufficient awakening is "to blame", not the limitations of the method or the work. This is a subtle form of power that makes the client dependent and ashamed.
The truthConstellations do not require any "level of awakening", spiritual status or special gift. They only require a willingness to look at what is and the will to take responsibility for one's own step. Insight sometimes comes immediately, and sometimes it matures over days or months, and both are fine and are no measure of anyone's worth. If change does not happen, that is not a verdict on the client. Sometimes more layers of work are needed, sometimes a different kind of support, and sometimes a different kind of help altogether. A mature approach does not shame the client for the pace of their process, it respects it.
The body, emotions and healing
Is illness just an "energy block" that is released without understanding and without treatment?
Claims that illness is "just an energy block" that is released without understanding its cause, that "no treatment or therapy is needed" and that when "the energy returns to its flow" all symptoms disappear, are not only untrue, they can be dangerous. They turn people away from medical help precisely when they need it most.
The truthSystemic constellations are not a medical treatment and do not cure illnesses. They can help shed light on the emotional and relational context in which a symptom exists, lighten the burden of unconscious loyalties and strengthen your inner support, but this never replaces diagnosis and treatment by a doctor. The connection between body and psyche is real and scientifically recognised: chronic stress and suppressed emotions affect health, and working on them can support recovery. But "support" and "treatment" are not the same. Responsible work always goes alongside medical care, never instead of it. If you have a health complaint, the first and essential place to go is a doctor.
Do constellations heal organs by "changing vibration" and remove the need for medication?
The idea that constellations "heal organs by changing vibration" and that after the work "the need for medication and medical treatment ends" is both scientifically unfounded and risky. Stopping prescribed therapy on the basis of a feeling from a workshop can seriously endanger health.
The truthNo constellation changes how an organ functions or replaces medication. Decisions about therapy are made exclusively with a doctor; no constellation facilitator has either the right or the knowledge to advise stopping treatment, and such advice is a clear sign that something is wrong with the approach. What systemic work can truly offer is peace around a difficult diagnosis, the strength to go through treatment, reconciliation with the family and with one's own fate. This is valuable support, and it is strongest precisely when it goes hand in hand with medicine, not against it.
Are fear, anger and sadness just "lower vibrations" that need to be released?
When fear, anger and sadness are declared "lower vibrations" that need to be "released" as soon as possible, and emotional suffering is attributed to "spiritual laziness" or "lack of faith in the field", the person is actually being told that their feelings are a mistake. This leads to repression and shame, not to healing.
The truthIn systemic work there are no "bad" emotions. Fear, anger and sadness are messages, often the voice of some excluded part of the system or of an unspoken truth. We do not release them by declaring them low; we understand them, give them a place and let them lead us to what is asking to be acknowledged. An emotion that is seen and acknowledged naturally changes its intensity, not because we have "raised it to a higher vibration", but because it has done its job. That is why compassion for one's own pain is part of the work, not an obstacle. Suffering is not laziness; very often, it is love that has not yet found its place.
Do dizziness, trembling or other bodily reactions mean that "energy is passing through"?
The interpretation that dizziness, trembling or warmth during the work "means that energy is passing through" sounds affirming, but it turns every bodily reaction into proof of an invisible process. The client is thereby taught to read their own states through someone else's interpretation instead of through their own sense, and sometimes a more serious bodily signal is overlooked.
The truthBodily reactions in the work are real and to be expected, but they have a simple explanation: when we touch a strong emotion or a repressed memory, the nervous system is activated, and breathing, pulse and muscle tension change. Trembling, tears or warmth are signs that something has been touched and that the body is processing it, not proof that "energy is flowing" through us. These signals deserve attention and respect, not mystification. Presence exercises help the body, breath and feeling stay connected while this unfolds. And if a reaction appears that is worrying or goes beyond the bounds of an emotional process, the body should be taken seriously and, when necessary, a doctor should be consulted.
Do all illnesses arise from a break with one's family, ancestors or from not honouring one's parents?
Claims that "all illnesses stem from a break with the family or ancestors", that "illness comes when a person does not honour their parents", that "pain in the body is always resistance to fate", or that "healing is possible only through gratitude", offer one explanation for everything. And one explanation for everything usually means blame: the ill person is told that they themselves are to blame for their illness.
The truthRelationships with parents and ancestors really do shape our inner life, and reconciliation with our origins can bring deep peace and relief. But illness is not a punishment for "lack of respect" nor proof of "resistance to destiny". Health depends on many factors, biological, hereditary, environmental and lifestyle, and reducing everything to a single relational cause is untrue and unfair to the person who is suffering. Systemic work does not look for someone to blame, but for order. When parents and ancestors are given back respect and their place, and a burden that is not ours is returned with love to the one it belongs to, a person gains more strength and peace and bears more easily what they are going through. This is support for life and for treatment, not a verdict on the one who is ill.
The facilitator and the power relationship
Does the constellation facilitator see everything and know the truth about the system?
One of the most widespread misconceptions is that the constellation facilitator "sees everything", that they have insight into another person's destiny, karma or the hidden truths of a family. This comes from the need for an authority who knows better than we do. But when a facilitator starts behaving like a prophet or an all-knowing observer, they leave the field of awareness and enter the field of power, and separate the client from their own sense of truth.
The truthThe constellation facilitator does not know, they bear witness. They do not lead the process because they see, but because they listen. Their task is not to uncover, but to create a space in which the truth reveals itself. When the facilitator stands in not-knowing, space opens in the field for a higher order. The phenomenon of "seeing" has an explanation: the brain recognises non-verbal signals, micro-expressions and emotional resonances; this is empathic synchronisation, not a magical ability. A true constellation facilitator does not place themselves above the client, but beside them; they know that the truth belongs to the field, not to a personality. Presence exercises keep that space clear, because truth is not born of knowledge, but of silence.
Is the constellation facilitator's intuition infallible, and is a "feeling" proof of truth?
The claim that the constellation facilitator's intuition is "infallible" and that each of their "feelings" is automatically proof that a message is true removes what matters most: checking and humility. If a feeling may not be questioned, the client is left without the right to recognise when something simply does not fit their life.
The truthFeelings and insights in the work are valuable, but they are not infallible. The constellation facilitator is a person with their own history, and their own projections can also speak through them, not only the dynamics of the client's system. That is why mature work always returns the feeling to the client for checking: "Does this mean something to you? Does it fit your experience?" The measure is not the facilitator's certainty, but the resonance in the client, the moment when something inside recognises it as true. A facilitator who declares their intuition infallible has stopped listening to the field and started listening to themselves. Humility is not a weakness of the work; it is its precondition.
Should the client simply surrender and trust the guide, without asking questions?
The view that "the client's role is to surrender, not to ask", that "disagreeing with an insight means resistance to the field" and that "doubt disturbs the field", takes away the client's voice. Disagreement is thereby declared in advance to be the client's mistake, and the facilitator's authority is made unquestionable, which is fertile ground for dependence and even for abuse.
The truthTrust in the process and critical presence are not opposites, they go together. The client has every right to ask, to disagree, to say "this doesn't fit me". That is not resistance to the field, but healthy contact with one's own truth, and it is often precisely this disagreement that opens up the real layer of the work. Doubt does not disturb the field; the only thing that disturbs it is the demand to stay silent. The aim of constellations is not obedience, but awareness, for the client to become the subject of their own change, not the recipient of someone else's conclusions. A constellation facilitator who cannot bear questions is protecting their own position, not the client's process.
Does the constellation facilitator "take on" the client's energy or "the karma of the group"?
The notion that the constellation facilitator "takes on the client's energy to free them from pain", or feels bad after the work because they have "taken on the karma of the group", sounds self-sacrificing, but in fact builds a cult around the guide: they become the one who suffers for others, and the client the one who owes them. This is a subtle but real form of power.
The truthNo one carries another person's pain in their place, and it is not even necessary. In systemic work everyone stays in their own place, that is the very principle of order. The constellation facilitator does not "take on" anything; they hold the space, remain present and help what belongs to someone to be returned precisely to them, with respect. Tiredness after intense work is normal, as after any deep emotional engagement, but it is explained in human terms, not as "karma taken on". That is why the facilitator's care for themselves is part of mature work: presence, boundaries and their own practice. Whoever claims to suffer for the sake of the group is imperceptibly asking the group to be grateful to them.
Can only the "chosen" or the "spiritually awakened" lead real constellations?
The claim that "only the spiritually awakened" or "the chosen" can receive and interpret "messages from the field", and that the power of a constellation facilitator is measured by "the number of people who cry at their workshops", combines two dangerous things: elitism and drama. It creates a closed circle of the chosen and a measure of success that rewards tears instead of integration.
The truthThe ability to lead a constellation does not come from being "chosen", but from serious learning, personal maturity, one's own lived process and ethical responsibility. That is why training exists: a thorough understanding of systemic principles, work on oneself, supervision and clear boundaries. It is a craft and a calling, not a secret initiation. The power of the work is not measured in tears. Catharsis is not healing; sometimes it is only a release without integration. Good work is often quiet, found more in the moment of acknowledgement, in reconciliation and in what the client takes into everyday life than in dramatic scenes. The measure is not how many people cried, but how many of them lived more freely after the work.
Tradition, psychology and science
Where do systemic constellations come from and how does psychology see them today?
In the traditional account, systemic constellations emerged from the work of Bert Hellinger, who described the "order of love" and the "family soul", an invisible connection that carries loyalties, exclusions and destinies across generations. Within this framework, the work is often presented as an approach of an almost metaphysical nature, in which "the field" knows and guides.
Psychology and researchContemporary psychology places constellations within a recognisable family of methods: systemic family therapy, Moreno's psychodrama and sociometry, Gestalt and transgenerational work. What Hellinger described phenomenologically is explained today through systems theory, the dynamics of family relationships, the transmission of patterns across generations and embodied cognition, the body as a participant in thinking and memory. Here tradition and science do not exclude each other, but complement each other. Hellinger's contribution remains valuable as a precise description of relational laws; psychology gives it a verifiable language and framework, and research checks what really happens and how long it lasts.
What actually is the "knowing field" from the perspective of psychology?
Traditionally, the "knowing" or "information" field is described as a space that in itself carries knowledge about the system, sometimes linked to the idea of morphic fields, and through which representatives "receive" information about people they do not know.
Psychology and researchPsychology explains the same phenomenon through social cognition, not through a physical field. People continuously, and for the most part unconsciously, read subtle signals: body posture, micro-expressions, breathing rhythm, tension, spatial arrangement. Added to this are empathic resonance and embodied simulation, the ability to "act out" another person's state internally and thus feel it. That is why "the field" is a useful metaphor for the group, unconscious communication that takes place in the room, not a supernatural force. The phenomenon does not lose its power in this way; it gains a verifiable explanation and ceases to be accessible only to "the chosen".
How can a representative feel something about a person they don't know at all?
In the traditional interpretation, the representative "receives" feelings and movements directly from the field, as if the system were sending them information independently of anything they see or know.
Psychology and researchResearch on representative perception shows that the experience is real and strikingly consistent, but that it is driven by psychological mechanisms: receptive empathy, reading non-verbal and spatial cues, ideomotor (unconscious) movements and projection shaped by the setup itself. The very way the client has arranged the figures and how they themselves stand in the space carries a great deal of information. In other words, the representative does not "read someone else's soul", they resonate with what is present and perceptible in the room. This also explains why representatives sometimes feel something "wrong": because their own experience also speaks through them. That is exactly why checking with the client is an indispensable part of mature work.
Is there scientific research on the effectiveness of constellations?
Yes, there are, and their number is growing. Controlled and randomised studies (among them the German research group around Christina Hunger) have shown that participants record progress in achieving personal goals and in psychological functioning after constellations, with effects that are maintained at later measurements. Representative perception has also been studied as a phenomenon in its own right. In our region, this step was taken by Dr Jelena Đorđević's master's thesis, the first scientific study of systemic constellations in the region, and a study that for the first time places the perspective of the clients themselves at its centre. In this way local practice is connected with contemporary international research, and the foundation for further serious work is being laid here as well. One should remain honest about the scope: the global evidence base is still young, samples are mostly small, and this kind of work is methodologically difficult to "blind" in the way a drug is in pharmacology. That is why we read the results as encouraging and promising, not as definitive proof. And precisely for that reason, new, carefully designed studies, especially those from the clients' perspective, are valuable.
What does Dr Jelena Đorđević's master's thesis explore?
Dr Jelena Đorđević's master's thesis is titled "Significant Experiences in Systemic Constellations from the Clients' Perspective" and is the first study of its kind in our region. Earlier research worldwide mostly measured outcomes from the outside, with questionnaires and scales designed by the researcher. This thesis starts from a different angle: it asks what clients themselves, from the inside, recognise as a significant moment in the work. This shift is not cosmetic. If constellations work through conscious recognition and acknowledgement, then the client's voice, and not the therapist's assumption, is the most reliable source on what really matters in the work. The aim of the thesis was to map significant experiences systematically and verifiably, not anecdotally, and in this way the domestic practice of constellations is placed for the first time on a research-based foundation.
How was the research conducted and how is a significant experience "measured"?
This is an extensive study that lasted about six months and combined two approaches, qualitative and quantitative (a so-called mixed-methods design). In the first, qualitative phase, six in-depth interviews were conducted with clients, from which statements about what they experienced as significant in the work were carefully extracted. In the second phase, these statements became the material for a separate analysis of how experiences are arranged, using the card-sorting technique: a larger number of participants (N=22) independently group the statements by similarity, and these groupings are then processed mathematically using Ward's hierarchical cluster analysis. In this way the structure does not come from the researcher, but from the way the clients themselves see it. So no "energy" is measured, but rather the structure of meaning, which themes naturally cluster together in people's experience. Indicators of agreement and stability of the solution confirmed that the groupings are not random, but consistent. This is a serious, standard and verifiable psychological method, not an interpretation of the "field".
What did the results show, which experiences do clients recognise as the most significant?
The analysis grouped the significant experiences into ten clear categories. Although the expressions were personal and varied, the themes repeated consistently: a moment of insight and a new angle from which to see one's own life; emotional relief through acknowledging what had long gone unspoken; a strong bodily experience; a sense of belonging and reconciliation, especially in relation to parents and ancestors; and, very often, empowerment, a return of responsibility and strength to oneself. It is particularly significant that clients almost never name anything spectacular or supernatural as "significant". They name recognition, acknowledgement and a shift in how they understand themselves and their relationships, exactly what the psychological framework also recognises as the carrier of change. In this way the results of this domestic study confirm what contemporary international studies also show. The findings have also been shaped into a scientific article for an international professional journal in the field of counselling and psychotherapy, taking this research beyond local boundaries and into the current global discussion on the effectiveness of constellations.
Is "transmission across generations" science or belief?
Traditionally, transmission across generations is described as an ancestral inheritance that flows through the "family soul": out of loyalty, a descendant carries the destiny, guilt or exclusion of an earlier member of the system.
Psychology and researchPsychology makes an important distinction here. The relational and emotional transmission of trauma through the family is well documented: through attachment style, parental behaviour, unspoken stories, family secrets and silence, children take on the patterns of previous generations, and this can be traced and researched. Biological, "epigenetic" transmission of trauma in humans is being researched, but it is still disputed and should not be presented as a proven fact. That is why it is honest to say: what a constellation makes visible is most often a psychological and relational inheritance, real, but not magical. And precisely because of that it can change: a pattern that was learned can also be brought into awareness and overcome.
How do constellations differ from psychotherapy?
Constellations are often seen as a substitute for therapy, as a faster and deeper path that resolves "in a single afternoon" what therapy works on for years.
Professional distinctionProfessionally speaking, these are different things. Constellations are most often a group, phenomenological and time-limited format focused on insight into and acknowledgement of relational dynamics; they do not make diagnoses and do not treat disorders. Psychotherapy is a structured, continuous clinical process with a clear framework, goals and responsibility on the part of the therapist. Part of what works in both cases are the common factors of any helping relationship: trust, hope, a sense of meaning and of safety. Constellations can be a valuable support and stimulus, but in the case of psychological difficulties they do not replace psychotherapy, psychiatric or medical help; they work best alongside them.
Is the effect of constellations just placebo and suggestion?
On one side is the claim that constellations work through supernatural forces; on the other, that everything is "just placebo and suggestion". Both extremes miss the mark.
What psychology saysExpectation, suggestibility and group dynamics undoubtedly contribute to the effect, but this is true of every form of psychological help and is called common factors. "Placebo" is not a deception; it is part of the way mind and body respond to meaning, hope and attention. To say "just placebo" is to underestimate how real and measurable these processes are. The key difference is not whether suggestion exists, but how we explain change. If we attribute it to real psychological processes, insight, emotional integration, new meaning and a sense of belonging, we stand on verifiable ground. If we attribute it to cosmic forces, we leave science. Constellations do not have to be a "miracle" to be effective.
How does neuroscience explain the change that happens in a constellation?
A powerful insight in a constellation is accompanied by the formation of new neural connections: what fires together, wires together. An emotionally charged moment can also open so-called memory reconsolidation: a space in which an old experience acquires a new meaning. For the body to enter this process, it must feel safe enough, which is also described by the polyvagal theory of nervous system regulation. But the new network is fragile at first. The brain retains what is repeated, so without conscious practice the old pattern, being more well-worn, easily takes over. That is why insight is not the end, but the beginning: systemic affirmations consolidate the new view, presence exercises bring the body back into the moment, and the transformation of the mind turns the experience into a lasting way of being. Neuroplasticity is, therefore, the scientific foundation of what tradition describes as "integration".
Does a scientific explanation diminish the depth and spirituality of this work?
There is a fear that as soon as we explain something, it will lose its soul, that demystification takes away depth and that "science and spirituality don't go together".
Our viewOur experience is the opposite. Understanding the mechanism does not destroy meaning, it protects it. Demystification protects the client from dependence and abuse, makes the work accessible to everyone (not only to the "chosen") and gives it the dignity of being verifiable. The depth remains: acknowledgement, belonging, reconciliation and love do not become smaller because we know something about how they work. That is why Constellario stands on both foundations: respect for the phenomenological wisdom of tradition and responsibility towards psychology and science. Truth before impression, clarity before mysticism, not to take away depth, but so that what is real can withstand the light.
