Many people begin their path of working on themselves in a similar way. Something in life is not going right, restlessness appears, and a book about positive thinking or the law of attraction comes into their hands. For a while it helps. And then it turns out that lasting happiness still slips away, and that something deeper is needed.
The book Soul Codes describes this path through four phases, which it calls codes: the Code of Spiritual Awakening, Decoding the Great Soul, Decoding the Great Spirit and the Code of Wholeness. These are not steps that must be climbed in order, but a map that helps you recognise where you are and what you need next.
This text draws on the book Soul Codes and explains these four phases and the role of conscious intention on this path.
Conscious intention: a tool you already use
The book starts from conscious intention. It directs our attention, our mental or emotional energy, towards a particular goal. Whether we focus on the positive or the negative, intention sets all processes in the mind in motion. Every act of focused attention, from preparing a meal to planning a business meeting, is a form of absorption.
When the mind is obsessed with fears or worries, these states not only grow stronger within us but also attract similar situations. The path to release begins when we see that constant negative states are burdens that can be transformed. Then self-inquiry through conscious intention becomes a practice that dissolves old patterns and establishes new states.
The first phase: the Code of Spiritual Awakening
At the beginning we are accompanied by a feeling that something in life is not right. This discord awakens the need for change. According to the book, in this period books promoting the law of attraction and positive thinking, such as The Secret or The Power of Your Subconscious Mind, often come into our hands. They encourage us to affirm a new way of life and help us recognise the structure of our mental patterns.
In this phase we still look for happiness outside, in people, situations and things. Conscious intention, visualisations and positive affirmations serve as mental training. But despite temporary improvements, lasting happiness slips away. The book does not underestimate this phase: it is a preparation for deeper work.
The second phase: Decoding the Great Soul
When we see that happiness is lasting neither through relationships nor through material achievements, attention turns inwards. We begin to become aware of the emotional and energetic waves passing through us and realise that our emotional structure is key to our sense of happiness or unhappiness.
Here we enter the core of Hellinger’s teaching about the Great Soul: how our choices, reactions and life paths are influenced by family entanglements and legacies passed down through generations. In this phase systemic constellations and systemic self-inquiry are important, as they transform and integrate the content that has been stirred.
“According to Hellinger, the ego or personality is not only a set of individual characteristics and experiences, but also a mirror of deeper family and transgenerational emotional patterns.” (from the book Soul Codes)
The third phase: Decoding the Great Spirit
The book states openly that neither constellations nor self-inquiry alone are enough for essential peace and wholeness. Then we turn to the practice of conscious presence, which makes it possible to connect with the Great Spirit, the universal consciousness that goes beyond the individual and family unconscious.
Unlike self-inquiry, which is directed towards particular desired outcomes, presence focuses on the present moment, without attachment to any result. According to the book, it is not merely a supplement, but a necessary part of the path for those seeking true peace.
Through a combination of systemic constellations, systemic self-inquiry and presence exercises, as the book states, a person becomes able to recognise and transform not only the manifestations of family patterns, but also the deeper causes of their inner unrest. In presence exercises attention is directed to ideas such as “I am the Absolute” or “I am”, which at first seem like affirmations, but actually serve to go beyond the mind.
The fourth phase: the Code of Wholeness
Soul Codes emphasises that every path is unique, that there is no strictly set timing and that the phases can overlap. True peace comes when all outer searches for happiness turn into inner discovery, when the seeker, the goal and the search itself merge into a whole.
In this phase two things are done: presence exercises, which support our essential nature, and growth processes through systemic self-inquiry, which increase the resonance of the universal Soul Codes, such as love, joy and understanding. The book describes this path as a full circle of returning to the source that was always within us.
You may recognise part of your own path in these phases. This is not an assessment of progress, but an invitation to see what you need now: a new understanding, work on your family legacy, or the silence of presence.
