Our inner life does not end at the edge of the body. There is something subtle that radiates from us, something others feel even before we speak: it is the field of our presence, our energetic imprint, our soul in motion. In some traditions this was described as the body of light, in scientific experiments as an electromagnetic envelope, and in everyday experience as the feeling that people “radiate”.
Our energy field grows and matures together with us. It is not separate from the body, thoughts and feelings; it reflects them. When we are burdened by unresolved emotions, family entanglements, traumas or long-term stress, this field becomes dense, tense, unstable. And conversely, when we consciously work on our inner balance, it becomes more open, lighter, more harmonious.
In systemic work, this can be seen clearly. A person who carries the burdens of others, whether from the family past or from collective experiences, often also “carries” other people's emotions and unconsciously takes on roles that do not belong to their essence. In such a state, meeting others can easily trigger a feeling of discomfort, fear, shame or loss of control. This is not weakness, it is a call to awareness.
Through the practice of presence, we become aware of these interactions. We learn to recognize what is ours and what is not. Through focused attention, we can allow the waves that pass through us to be seen, without attachment, without struggle. In this way, our energetic space is purified.
In Orthodoxy, the concept of the energy body is not expressed terminologically as in contemporary spiritual practices, but its essence is deeply understood and conveyed through images of light, of the soul and of the presence of the Holy Spirit in the human being. The Holy Fathers speak of the illumination of the heart: when a person is purified through repentance, prayer and fasting, the spiritual eye of the heart (nous) is sanctified, and then the whole being radiates the presence of grace-filled light. In the tradition of the Jesus Prayer, gradually becoming aware of the layers of sin and returning to inner stillness allows a person to gather themselves as a whole, so that “the soul illuminates the body from within”. Saint Seraphim of Sarov said that the goal of the spiritual life is the acquisition of the Holy Spirit, and that a person then becomes luminous, not metaphorically, but literally.
In Buddhism, there is no term “aura” in the modern sense, but the concept of the body of light and of energetic presence is extremely significant. In Tibetan Buddhism, the “body of light” (Tögal practice) is spoken of as a spiritual attainment. Through meditation, breathing and contemplation, the practitioner is freed from dense mental and emotional contents and arrives at a refined body of awareness, which becomes luminous. When a person reaches the state of complete liberation (Rainbow Body), their physical body, according to tradition, can be transformed into a being of pure light.
In Hinduism, the concept of the aura and the energy bodies is elaborated through the system of the pranamaya kosha (the energy sheath) and the chakras, centres of subtle energy. The human being is seen as multi-layered: the physical body (annamaya), the energy body (pranamaya), the mental body (manomaya), the body of intelligence (vijnanamaya) and the body of bliss (anandamaya). When the energy flow (prana) is purified, the aura becomes clear, powerful, radiant.
The Bhagavad Gita says: “One who is even-minded in joy and pain, who is calm and united with the self, shines in this world like a flame that does not flicker.”
In science, the concept of the aura has not yet been officially confirmed by classical instruments, but research in biophysics, quantum medicine and neurocardiology is opening the door to understanding the existence of subtle fields. The HeartMath Institute in California has shown that the heart generates an electromagnetic field that can be detected up to several metres from the body, and that it reacts directly to our emotions, thoughts and state of mind.
Science is beginning to acknowledge what mystics have always known: we exist in a field that radiates, feels and connects.
That is why the energy field is not “contact with the invisible”, but an invitation to remember the light we already carry. When we become aware of this, not only intellectually, but with our whole being, our presence stops being accidental. It becomes intention, a lighthouse and a blessing.
We do not radiate because we try. We radiate when we return to ourselves.

All it takes is conscious intention. And the path of conscious intention does not ask for perfection, but for presence. It does not ask us to know everything, but to be ready to open up.
The first step is not big. But it is true.
And when it is true, it is already bright.
